If 100 customers walked into your dealership today, would you know it? Of course. Your team would see them. Someone would greet them. Managers would know the showroom was busy. And everyone would understand that those 100 people represented 100 opportunities to sell a vehicle.
Now imagine 100 customers are texting, emailing, chatting or exchanging videos with your dealership. How many opportunities do you have?
100.
But ask a dealership how many customers are actively talking to their team digitally today, and the answer is often much harder to find. That needs to change.
Customers are doing a significant amount of shopping before they ever walk through your doors. They’re researching vehicles, comparing dealerships and starting conversations from their phones. When a customer is actively communicating with your dealership through text, email, chat or video, they aren’t just another lead sitting in the CRM.
They’re in your showroom.
If someone walked onto your lot, your team wouldn’t wait an hour to acknowledge them. Yet digitally, delays and missed responses still happen. The dealerships that recognize these conversations as real showroom traffic have an opportunity to compete differently.
Knowing how many leads you receive is only part of the story. If 100 customers are actively talking to your dealership, how many become showroom visits? How many conversations stall? How quickly does your team respond? And how much did you spend in marketing to generate opportunities that never became meaningful conversations?
Those questions expose a new set of KPIs dealerships should be paying attention to. They also expose something we rarely quantify: the soft cost of wasted opportunity.
Dealerships spend significant marketing dollars generating interest. When those opportunities aren’t engaged or converted effectively, the problem may not be lead volume. It may be what happens after the lead arrives.
Technology, including AI agents, is creating new ways to keep customers engaged and help dealership teams focus their attention on the right activity at the right time. But technology alone isn’t the strategy. The real change is behavioral: treating a customer talking to you digitally with the same urgency and importance as a customer standing in your showroom.
Because the next customer you sell may already be in your showroom. You just haven’t met them in person yet.
